The “A” family ~ Mantorville family portraits

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Or maybe I should say the A+ family! Logan is FULL of energy and kept me smiling all through the session. I think Mom and Dad might like him a little too!

We ran all over the park in Mantorville, throwing sticks into the water, racing across the bridge, playing in the playground, jumping in puddles, and bike riding.

Thanks A family! It was a beautiful night, but I wish I had a little more of it. Fall is definitely here, and it is time to push session times back.

Phil ~ Triton 2011 senior pictures

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

When Phil’s sister asked if I would be willing to shoot some pictures at their farm, I tried to be casual when I agreed. Inside, I was celebrating. Farms are so cool! Crops and animals and equipment and barns and so much space. Probably because I was raised in the city, I am fascinated by farms. Ok, now that I have exposed what a dork I am – again, let’s get to Phil!

Phil is quiet, curious, kind, handsome, smart, an archer, tree-climber and all around adventurer. I am confident that Phil is going places in this world!

(This was the first session in which I had to say “Please don’t shoot me.”)

After leaving the farms, Phil took me to the nature area around the school. I could tell it was an area he connected with, as he showed me around and told me stories. I definitely have another favorite walking and shooting place. Thank you Phil!

What to wear? ~ Rochester, MN photography

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

I occasionally get asked for advice on what to wear for photos, especially for families. The easiest choice is always to dress everyone the same–all in white, all in black, etc. Besides being easy, this freezes your family in time. It also shows unity. If this is what you are going for, mission accomplished!

For many, rather than unity, they want their pictures to capture personality. Dressing alike may feel more like a uniform and make the kids more tense. It is for this group of thinkers that I have created “What to wear,” a periodic topic that will appear on Wednesdays, because I like alliteration. These special posts will share some ideas of how to pull together outfits for family pictures. I am not a style maven, and I certainly don’t expect you to run to the store to purchase everything in these pictures. The purpose of these are to spark ideas. All fashions in the following images are from oldnavy.com and gap.com.

For each look, I’ll dress a mom-dad-son-daughter. If your family doesn’t look like that, don’t worry; mine doesn’t either. Again, these are just for ideas on colors and patterns as you dig through your closets.

Bold and beautiful:
Your family is colorful, fun and definitely not uniform. This look is for you. Pull out your daughters favorite dress (big prints work great in pictures), and use the main colors to create the palette. I love that these show layering, which is totally practical for fall portraits.

Casual blues:
You don’t need to dress up for pictures! Stay comfortable and mellow in monochrome. Pick one color and choose different styles for the whole family in various shades. I find that blue works really well for monochrome, but maybe that’s because I have a house full of boys :-)
